In this article I will explain the epic mythology of the original Greek gods from the  start time of the Titans, until the times of the gods of Olympus are raised in the film Percy Jackson, The Lightning Thief.


References that are mostly used by people  in ancient Greek mythology are literary works of Homer and Hesiod. The explanation in the article also will be more quotes from the epic works of Homer and Hesiod writing.

Titan Gods

Dalam mitologi Yunani, para dewa titan adalah para dewa yang pertama kali ada sebelum para dewa-dewa di Olimpus hadir. In Greek mythology, The Titan Gods  were the first gods that existed  before the Gods of Olympus were present.These early gods was described by Hesiod in his Theogoni work as the gods who just showed up.

According to Hesiod, the beginning of all stories of the gods is a condition called Chaos. In Greek, called Χαος which, if translated from the present language, chaos describes a chaotic state.

According to Hesiod, this is the initial state of the universe before the appearance of the gods into the universe. From this chaos emerged the earliest legends of Greek mythology.

Gaia (in Greek, ), Eros (Love), the Abyss (Tartarus or hell), and Erebus are gods who first emerged from the chaos of the universe.

In Roman mythology, Gaia was known as Tellus or Terra. Hesiod tells us that after Gaia emerged from Chaos, he was then associated with Oranos (sky), then gave birth to 12 Titans (the rulers of the earth before the time of the Gods of Olympus).

The whole of the Gaian children are , 6 Titans men : Coeus, Crius, Cronus, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Oceanus. 6 Titans women,: Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Rhea, Theia, Themis, and Tethys.
Cronos is a clever and least youngest titan as well as the most mischievous among  the others Tittans. Considering Cronos  delinquency , Gaia and Oranos then decided that there will be no more others Titans besides them.

One day, Cronos killed his own father,  Oranos.Then he took his sister Rhea as a wife , and became ruler of his own brother.
Cronos behavior can be said evil. For fear if what he did to his father will be followed by his son, each time Rhea gave birth to a baby, Cronos will be snatched and ate it.
 
Because Cronos constantly to do it, Rhea began to hate Cronos. One day when Rhea  will give birth, she outsmart Cronos by wrapping a stone with a cloth so that Cronos will eat the stones that he thinks Rhea's babies.

Rhea then hid the original baby and named it  Zeus who would later become the god of all gods. When Zeus finally become an adult, he put the poison in  his father drink, Cronos vomit  that makes all of Zeus brothers and stone that once was thought Zeus by Cronos spilled out

Zeus  then challenged his father to fight for the throne of power. With the assistance of Cyclopes who was saved by Zeus from Tartarus, Zeus was eventually won and occupied the throne of power. Cronos then thrown into Tartarus (hell).

Gods of Olympus

Setelah Zeus mengalahkan ayahnya, masa pemerintahan alam semesta yang baru pun dimulai. After Zeus defeated his father, the reign of the new universe begins. This period is called, the god of Olympus era. In this period there are 12 gods who ruled and at the same time regulate their own teritory.

1. Zeus

Zeus is the leader who reigns in Olympus. Zeus juga merupakan dewa hujan dan dewa langit. Zeus also the rain god and the god of the sky. He is often depicted with a scepter, eagle on his shoulder and lightning rod in his hand.


He also described as authoritative male figure with a beard and always look sturdy.  Lightning Sticks owned Zeus, supposedly is the strongest weapon that makes it feared other gods and the humans.

Zeus is said to frequently throw his lighting sticks to those who frequently violate the oath.
Zeus married his sister, Hera, who is also the goddess  Wedding. Zeus divided the world into three and divides these worlds with his two brothers, Poseidon who became the god  Lord of the Sea, and Hades who became the ruler  the World of Death  that  located under the ground or in the bowels of the earth.

2. Poseidon

Poseidon is the god who is considered the most feasible to monitor the oceans that cover two thirds of the earth.  Poseidon described as the god  who always brings his trident stick everywhere.

 
According to ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon was the  the most powerful god  among the other brothers, so Zeus entrusted the most extensive part of the earth to be ruled by  Poseidon.

In some ancient Greek epic, he was  described as a  temperamental figure, thus making the nature of the ocean is also a temperamental.  Poseidon married Amphitrite as his wife, who was the grandson of the Titan Oceanus.
 Although in some epic he was described as someone who tempramental, in some stories also described how Poseidon often help the sailors.

In a another story Poseidon also had destroyed  the Marine Fleet of Greek  due to their arrogance after winning a battle.

3. Hades (Pluto)

Hades was the god of death or god of hell in Greek mythology. Hades is also known by the name of Pluto (Plouton) in Roman mythology.  Hades is often depicted with three-headed dog named Cerberus in the underworld (hell).

 
In Christianity the word Hades is used to translate the word Sheol, in Hebrew, which means the grave world or "world below". Indonesian translate the word Hades, which means the grave with the word hell, taken from the Sanskrit, with the same meaning.


4. Hestia


Goddess Hestia is one of Zeus sister but she does not play any important role in ancient Greek mythology.  Goddess Hestia in addition is well-known as the patron goddess of the house, he was also famous as the patron goddess of the family, and the goddess of the hearth.


5. Hera

Hera dikenal sebagai istri sekaligus saudara dari Zeus. Hera was known as the wife and sister of Zeus. Hera was the goddess of marriage because it is very understand pain from infidelity, so that a faithful patron for women who are married.

She is described as the goddess of the full majesty and full of wisdom.  Often enthroned and crowned with a plain (high cylindrical crown), which is only worn by some major goddesses.

The descendants of Hera with Zeus, among others are, Ares (the god of war), Hebe (goddess of youth), Eris (goddess of discord), and Eileithyia (goddess of birth).

In a story, it is said that because of Hera jealous of Zeus who had children cause an affair with Athena, Hera also gave birth to a child of her relationship with Hephaestus.

In other versions of epic Greek mythology, it is said that Hephaestus was the son of Hera and Zeus, and because of Hera and Zeus was disgusted with the ugly Hephaestus, so he was banished from Mount Olympus.  As revenge, Hephaestus  cursed Hera, and then release the curse after he has married Aphrodite.

As the sisters and at the same time as the wife of Zeus, Hera was the queen of heaven that  is the source of jealousy and envy for the other goddesses on Mount Olympia. She is beautiful and also cunning. And although he was very polite, he often hold grudges on those who impede his intentions.

6. Ares 

Ares is The God of War. He was disliked by both parents , Zeus and Hera because he always thirst for blood and a cold-blooded killer.


His presence in a war involving Greece, make the enemy tremble at their own knees . In some of the epic it is told that he would kill all the enemy  mercilessly if they have guts  involved in the war against Greece.

Ares  often make the field into a sea of blood as he continues to hunt down the enemies without mercy.

Ares was also famous as the god of a coward because when he was injured, he will flee from the battlefield to return to the Mount Olympus, his will cried and then will be heard all over the mountain Olympus.

And what about Kratos, who in the game God of War described as the god of war?

So this was the story, at a time, when Ares just returned from a battle on the battlefield and were resting, Hera allows Kratos to kill Ares and once succeeded him as the god of war.

Kratos was originally only an ordinary person who endowed by the god Apollo the strength and bravery that exceeds any other human.


7.  Athens

Athens was a Greek goddess who symbolizes wisdom, science and war strategy. Athens is also known as the goddess who taught the heroes.

Athena is an armed goddess of war and was never portrayed as a child, always as a virgin (virgin / parthenos). Her Parthenon temple in Athens, Greece is the most famous temple.

He does not have a husband or lover, although once the event Hephaestus tried to tease her but failed.  Athens is also the sister of Ares the god of war.

Athens is also famous for mercy on the man when the gods of arbitrary power. She also killed Medusa and put her head on a shield called "Shield of Aegis", a shield which according to myth is very powerful.
In some epic of ancient Greek mythology, Athena supposedly very fierce and brave on the battlefield. All that is in Athens  make Zeus fall in love and make Athens as his favorite child.

8. Apollo

Apollo is the son of Zeus and the results of his relationship with Leto. He is the twin brother of Artemis. Apollo is the god of music that always drawn plays gold harp  and he  is an archer god who often shoot with his silver bow.

He is the god of healing who taught medicine to humans, the god of light, and also the god of truth that can not tell a lie.


9. Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the goddess of love, beauty and desire. It is said that she has a magic belt that could make anyone who she wants turn to want her.

The story of the birth of Aphrodite there are two different versions of the story. The first version says that she was the child of Zeus in his relationship with Dione. The second version refers to the story when Cronos beat Oranos and threw it into the sea, Aphrodite later emerged from the foam bubbles arising in the shells.

Aphrodite has Hephaestus as her husband . He also has a son named Eros who became the god of romance. Aphrodite konon pernah selingkuh dengan Ares. Aphrodite was said  have an affair with Ares.

10. 1Hermes

Hermes is the son of Zeus from his relationship with Maia. Hermes is also the messenger of the god Zeus.  Hermes is  the fastest among  other gods.

He is always depicted wearing winged sandals, winged cap, and a magic wand. He is the god who created the sports racing for his habit of always moving fast. He is also the guiding god of the dead to the world underground.
Hermes often appears in some Greek epic, and described as the god of good luck and prosperity so that he became a favorite god among the gods on Olympus.

11. Artemis

Artemis adalah Dewi berburu yang sama liarnya dengan alam itu sendiri. Artemis is the Goddess of the  hunting with the same wild like  nature itself. She is sacred  goddess and protector for the young hunter who calmly set places in the wild earth.


Because cursed by Hera who knows he is the child of Zeus and Leto affairs, then Artemis is forced to be born on an island that was never touched by the sun.
Zeus then kind enough to lift the island from the sea floor that has never touched the sun, the island was named Ortygia. Leto gave birth on the island.

Then she helped her mother gave birth to Apollo, who was born in the seventh month. Mungkin oleh sebab inilah Artemis disebut juga sebagai dewi kelahiran. Perhaps this was the reason why she also referred  as the goddess of birth.

12. 12. Hephaestus Hephaestus

Hephaestus is the only god who does not have the handsome looks like the other gods. Hephaestus was the son of Zeus and Hera.  He is the only god who was paralyzed.  There are two versions of the story that explains about this paralysis.

According to the first version, Hera upset with her son  odd form,  then threw Hephaestus to earth and make him paralyzed. The second version says if Zeus annoyed by Hephaestus which have properties like her mother so that Zeus threw him from Mount Olympus.
Whatever the weaknesss that exist within him, Hephaestus covered it with extraordinary powers.  And although he was ugly, or perhaps precisely because of that he was an expert to create objects that are very beautiful.

From his workshop deep in the earth, this lord of fire and forging created palaces, tombs and dresses for  the gods, such as: Zeus lightning  and Athens Armour. He was the blacksmith god and creator of the shield of the gods.
